- Update: it appears that using the Ovi Suite software, you don't need to go to the trouble of downloading the older maps .sis files. Please try downloading Ovi Maps using the Ovi Suite software which works well and you can also download the maps through the Ovi Suite software as well! The website that hosted the older .sis files is not online anymore. If the Ovi Suite updater isn't working for you, let me know in the comments!
Wow! The visits to my posts on tweaking the Nokia E71x, some apps for the Nokia E71x and my recommended gear and more applications for the E71x are insane by my very modest standards. This blog is a labor of love and at most, I get ~ 15 visits daily (5 of which are from Bots). So, seeing something in the neighborhood of 60 visits/day is pretty huge and no Bots there! :D It tells me that this is a market that can be tapped into and by Jove, I aim to please! Just make sure you support a struggling artist/blogger by coming back and checking out any advertisements that catch your eyes! {end of shameless plug}. Keep track of my posts on Nokia E71x through my tag.
So, what else have I discovered about my new Nokia E71x since I've had it? Well, here goes:
- The question is not if your phone will get scuffed up, it's when. Get a case for your phone now or see the black beauty get scarred.
- Google Maps will not work without a data connection. If you obtained a Nokia E71x without signing up for a data connection AND you are able to use Google Maps, guess what? You are making a data counter at AT & T very happy. I'm dreading my phone bill because I didn't realize that Google Maps didn't work with Wifi and I had been playing rather heavily with tracking myself via Google Maps. Oy vey. Painful and expensive lesson learned.
- Nokia Maps 3.0 (now Ovi Maps) works on your Nokia E71x device. The road to getting it installed is painful, but it can be done. The best part about it? Nokia Maps 3.0 will work on your device without needing a data connection. For driving directions to work, you will need to purchase a license from Nokia. You don't need Wifi connection for the turn-by-turn directions to work. Again, with the Ovi Suite software, there's no need for the instructions below. Ovi Suite will detect your Nokia E71x device and allow you to install Ovi maps on your device! , but if you are a sucker for pain, suit yourself. :) Here's I went through to get it working on my device:
- Download Nokia Maps 2.0 and 3.0 onto your computer using the files (Nokia_Maps_2.0_0701_3.2_u.sis> and Nokia_Maps_3.0_0302_3.2_u.sis which are actually for 6650 device, but apparently works on the E71x) from this website (http://tamale.pwnij.com/e71x/). FIRST, make sure your microSD card is in your phone. We will be dealing with a lot of data so check yourself. SECOND, install Nokia Maps 2.0 on your device via the Nokia PC Suite software and run Nokia Maps 2.0 once. Reboot your device after the install successfully completes. Ensure you are doing the installation using your USB cord. THEN, install Nokia Maps 3.0 onto your device through PC Suite and run it once as well. At this point, you may run into the "low memory" message and all that is needed is for you to go to your C:/ or E:/ drive and delete the Cities/ folder and a 'qf' file.
- If you don't know what C:/ or E:/ drive means, I strongly recommend you get an AT & T data plan. If you do, thumbs up. Keep reading.
- After deleting the Cities/ folder (if you had a problem starting up Nokia Maps 3.0 in the first place), then start up Nokia Maps 3.0 again. Success! Restart your device to 'clear its head'.
- Visit Nokia's website and download two files: (i)Nokia Map loader for downloading the maps (ii) Nokia Map Updater for updating the Nokia Maps software. Hint: your device selection is the E71 in order to access the Nokia Maps Updater software.
- Connect your Nokia E71x phone to the computer in Mass Storage PC Suite mode and start up Nokia Maps Updater software. It should detect your device and prompt you to update your Nokia Maps 3.0 software to Nokia Maps 3.0.1. If you get this far, you're looking mighty fine. :D
- Then, fire up the Nokia Maps Uploader software (Hint: do the actual map downloading at a time when your network is least congested. I did the download at ~ 2am so that about 1.4GB didn't take 2 years to download).I opted to download the entire US maps to my device. I'm hoping you realize that you must already have your microSD card (8GB or more) in your device because the US maps are ~ 1.4GB in size.
- When the download is done, exit and you are free to fire up the Nokia Maps software. In my experience, it takes a couple of minutes to get a GPS fix, but I'm not complaining because it's free, right? You get what you pay for. In this case, I hear AT & T's Navigator software is quite good, but again, I am averse to paying for convenience. lol.
- PS: Based on comments, I'm putting up a link to this site that points directly to the maps files for Ovi Maps 3.0 that reside on Nokia's servers (in case the Map Loader software is not working as it should).
- Games:- Handango is pretty pathetic in its selection of games for the Nokia E71x device. However, I discovered that Gameloft has a mobile site and as I write, I've got Prince of Persia on my device! However, their online payment system has hiccups. Something I've also discovered is that Handango is like an aggregator which makes resolving issues more complicated than it needs to if you need a refund issued. So, I'm trying to hunt down the actual game developers for the applications I purchase and get them from their website directly if they have an option to purchase online from them!.
- Thus far, all my paid downloads have been for useful applications like the Handy Converter and the Handy Expense tracker, Merriam Webster 3rd International Unabridged Dictionary with a Sound module, a paid KJV bible (along with 2 free readers from Olive Tree Bible Software and Mobipocket E-Book Reader), Call Recorder, Mobiola Screen Capture software, Twittix, X-plore, Quickoffice Premier 6, Adobe Reader LE 2.5 and Emoze Pro.
- Lastly, my entire series of Nokia E71x posts will not be complete without mentioning the guys at Nokia Experts who have been a key factor in getting me started on my way to emancipating myself from AT & T's shackles. Go visit them and encourage them to keep posting more Nokia E71x tips and tricks!!
PS: Check my series of posts on Tweaking the Nokia E71x phone, more apps for the Nokia phone and my latest Nokia E71x post on yet more applications. Cheers!

Did you connect to a wifi hotspot before starting up the Maps program? It might help if you activated your offline profile as well just to troubleshoot the problem. You can activate the offline profile by pressing the "on" button once and scrolling down till you see the "Offline" profile. This will shutoff your 3G/Media net access and you will be only able to use Wifi.

Did you connect your phone to your PC via the USB cord? For some reason, the Nokia Maps updater won't recognize my phone if I try to connect Maps Updater to my phone via a bluetooth connection. That would be my first recommendation i.e. connect your phone to the PC via the provided USB cord. Then, run the Maps Updater software. Comment if this works for you.

Waiting for GPS means it's waiting for enough GPS signals to accurately pinpoint your location. I've found that it takes at least 3 minutes of the phone in an open area while stationary for the Nokia Maps program to get a fix. Once it gets a fix, it's pretty good at hanging on and if it loses the GPS signal, it 'catches' the signal much more quickly.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your quick response. yes i did by connecting my cell phone via usb cord and in pc suite mod. But i am getting the same error, As i mentioned earlier. I dont know whether it is internet error or something else.
CAn we download maps by using cellphone via WIFI connection?
Nokia maps 3.0 is working well. As you said earlier it took some time to fix GPS. But I dont have maps and i am not using data plan. Is there any way That i can download usa maps to my cell phone and nokia maps software can get data from there instead of using WIFI to upload maps.
what about licensing things.?
Do we need to buy any license to get turn to turn navigation or after downloading maps by updater it will work fine.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks raj.

Based on what I've read online, make sure you have the latest version of the Nokia PC suite software. What phone do you have? I'm assuming it's a Nokia E71x phone. You can download the huge Map files from this website: http://diabo.freehostia.com/symbian/indexmaps.htm As always, caveat emptor when downloading links from external sites posted here. :) Also, you might want to consider uninstalling the Maps Updater and Maps Loader software entirely and re-installing them. It appears to have worked for the guy in this thread. Lastly, the premium services available for the Ovi Maps 3.0 are:
i) Traffic infoii) Guidesiii) Drive Navigationiv) City Explorer
Pricing for these items is also available on the Nokia website.

I installed the Nokia Map 3.0 successfully. However, when I launched it, it could not lock the gps. So I have a few question.
1) How long does it take to lock the gps?
2) Do I need to stay outside in a clear area?
3) How do I know that the gps is lock (any icons)? I keep getting the flashing phone icon with 0 kb progress bar at the right bottom of the screen.
Thanks for helping!!!

In my experience, you need to be in an open area for, at least, 5 minutes to get a lock on your GPS signal. The GPS will be locked when the bar starts showing green stripes. The more green stripes, the stronger the gps signal. You're very welcome!

Press the button that you would use to turn the phone off just once. It is a red button on top of the phone. Then, you will see various options such as "switch off", "lock keypad", etc. The "offline" profile is at the bottom of the list.

If there's no Wifi, you simply won't be able to make use of the Traffic and Info feature if you have that. Other than that, I haven't missed out by not having Wifi. As long as you have downloaded the current maps to your microSD card, you should be able to explore/browse your city via Ovi Maps. You don't need to go online for Drive Navigation if that is a concern of yours.

Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial. I got it working even though my computer is a Mac which requires a bit more of an effort on the software side. Still not a great deal of Mac support but Nokia is at least putting some effort into it. One question that might be a bit silly...if I just want to look at a map and don't really need to fix my location via GPS (i.e. if I simply want to see where "Nowhereville" is on a map of my state) where do I find it on my phone? I don't seem to be able to do this until the phone finds a GPS fix.

Hey Kiem, have you had any luck? I have the exact same problem as you. Am I required to be in an open area AND stationary as well? I've left it on while I drive around but I don't know if that counts. Is this just a Nokia Maps software issue? Even though I cannot connect to anything while indoors with NOkia Maps I have experimented with Google Maps and I definitely can get a location from the GPS using Google.

Wang,
I got the gps locked. It usually take about 5 minutes to lock on the gps. Just stay outside of your house (in open area). Nokia map is much better since it doesn't use any data (I preloaded the map via PC). However, turn-by-turn navigating requires license. You can still do route planning and track your position free though. I don't know whether any of you in here can overcome the licensing issue (it will do turn-by-turn navigation for about 1 minute and then ask you to obtain the license).

Hey Marv,
Marv, I got it working. It was just a matter of rebooting my phone...lol. Felt silly to think basic computer installation techniques eluded me. I did what you did, that is to use Map Uploader to download the entire US maps (1.4 gigs), which reminds me...did you have issue with your sd card assigning a set amount of space for maps installation? I had a 2gig card but when I loaded up Uploader it said I only had 1.6gigs worth of space for maps installation.
In regards to your second issue about turn-by-turn directions. Based on what I read while getting Nokia Maps installed, I came across a few "cracked" copies of Novi Maps 3.0. I don't know how reputable they are though. And from what I read, your phone has to be "cracked" as well. Not sure what that means since I think the term applies to E71 phones as well as E71x. Let me know if you hear of anything.

You may need to block all internet access on your phone to be absolutely sure you are not using any of ATT's services. Other than blocking the internet, I'd recommend verifying that you have Medianet as the last on the priority scale. Check your phone settings and go to connections. Click "destination" and make sure that on all 3 destinations, ATT's services are the last on the scale. Good luck!

If you click the middle or OK button, you should select explore and it'll bring up a category/listing of things like automobiles, museums, etc. Note that it'll be listing things from the area that the red dot is on. This should work assuming you have downloaded the entire US maps to your microSD card. Also, you can move the red dot arround using the D-pad even though you don't have a GPS fix. Just move it to the area you want and click the OK button and feel free to explore from there! Hope this helps. :)

Yeah, it was so annoying and it drove me to get the license. Which I might add is not all it's cracked up to be. Sure, it's better than spending $300 on a gps device, but it's not the sharpest tool in the shed. :)

i'm pretty sure that medianet is on the last of the priority list...however, have you tried checking on your data counter if you have 5-6 kb data of medianet usage?thank you

i think that nokia/ovi store being a legal business entity have this kind of business agreement of some sort..i can assure you...even if i put it offline..no network connection at all....it will still connect to medianet again....5-6 kb...just check your data counter..

i think i now figure it out what is the 5kb data usage that medianet charged me on the innialization stage...it is where the network cellsite figure out our specific location...remember that we only got the Agps...means assisted by the network..so we could not really have an absolutely FREE usage of the gps..

I downloaded everything just fine and seemed to work okay until I actually went out of town. When I used it to search an address it would lock into the driving directions for about 30 seconds then a message would pop up "Online connection required to enter the shop. Connect now?" when I say NO then I loose my GPS guidance (though the GPS still shows my co-ordinance). Sometimes a message comes up asking me to pay a fee (daily $2.29, monthly $8.89 or yearly $63.99) for the use of the Nokia Guidance Service. I thought that was free. Am I doing something wrong? By the way I have tried disabling online connection but it still ask me to connect to the online shop.

Hello Jane,
Thanks for the tutorials. I'm having couple of the problem with running the maps on the phone and was wondering if you can point me in the right directions. First, I got both version of the maps 2.0 and 3.0 from the site you have listed in the step 1. But when i try to run the maps 2.0 and 3.0 on my phone like you have asked, it wouldn't load to 100 % , for 2.0 version it loads upto 17% and for 3.0 version, the blue bar is like 20 % across the screen. I"m not sure what i'm doing wrong. I have updated the firmware version on the phone like you have asked. I was thinking is it because i had them install on my phone and not on the memory card ? if so how can do i that, like choose where to install the file, i tired to search for it but i couldn't find it. Thank you for your attention , please help.

VP,
With Ovi Suite 2.0 software, there is no need for the instructions on this post. Please backup your phone's contacts/calendar/etc and then, uninstall the Nokia PC Suite software. Once you're done, install the Ovi Suite software and follow the instructions for connecting your phone to the computer. Ovi Suite software recognizes the Nokia E71x phone and you should be able to install the Maps 3.0 software without needing any 2.0 .sisx files. Hope this helps.
