For those first-time visitors, I purchased Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 in August 2008. I was moderately happy with it, but after a while, things started going awry. First, Bitdefender caused the data execution prevention on Vista to kick in whenever I started Firefox. This was a well known issue and I was able to resolve the matter by disabling Bitdefender's toolbar/plugin for Firefox. After that incident, Bidefender would shut itself off for no reason so I uninstalled it. I then attempted to reinstall Bitdefender on my laptop and all my efforts failed. I've got the screenshots and log files to prove it. After several days of being without antivirus protection and trying out all approaches detailed on Bitdefender's support website, I could not resolve the issue on my own. Then, I went a step further. I initiated a chat conversation with a Bitdefender online representative who walked me through some more steps and when his recommendations didn't improve the matter, he sent me an email containing information on running some Bitdefender diagnostic tools. I dutifully ran those tools, packaged up the information generated and sent the data to the Bitdefender support staff. That was my last 'communique, if you will, that I had with Bitdefender.
Fast forward to the new year and approximately 6 weeks and 3 days after sending my S.O.S. email to Bitdefender's email support system, chatting with an online representative and running several diagnostic tests , I finally got a reply to my inquiry which is shown below:
Dear Jane,
We are sorry for the late reply and any inconvenience it may have caused. If the issue you reported still occurs please let me know, so that we can begin troubleshooting the situation. Looking forward to your reply. Best regards,
Xxxxxxxx Xxxx
BitDefender Technical Support Engineer
My first reaction was to snort my tea. I mean, I
understand that they may have been hoping that the issue would have somehow resolved itself (and I confess to being bummed out that my googling skills didn't help me too much) without their help, but a simple "knock knock" at my virtual door to make sure the issue was resolved or not would have sufficed. Anyhow, I alternated between sending an expletive-filled email that would sate my anger and sending a "well thought-out", but impassioned email that would make some sense. Thankfully, the smart part of me won. Here's what I wrote back to the Bitdefender support system:
To Whom It May Concern:
I've since uninstalled Bitdefender IS 2009 and loudly telling all who will listen not to buy Bitdefender IS 2009. I have already paid for a competitor's product (Norton Internet Security 2009) and I'm happier than ever. I am appalled that it has been over a month since I notified your support staff that I couldn't even install Bitdefender IS 2009 on my PC anymore. Now, I get an email asking if my issue has been auto-magically resolved?
To cut this tale of woe short, I don't believe I'll be bothering your support staff anymore because I will not be purchasing any more products from Bitdefender. My issue was obviously not resolved and I have since moved on to a more mature internet security offering.
Thanks for eventually getting back to me. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Jane
And that was that! It is really sad when poor customer experience translates into lost sales even when your product may be a force to recok with it in its own right. File Under: Lost-me-when-you-ignored-me. :)
This blog was started as a labor of love and I started it primarily to edutain (an amalgam of education and entertainment) my readers who seek plain Jane answers to common or uncommon problems with technology used in their day-to-day lives. :) Suggestions?

Your story is almost the same as Mine,
Have also switched to Norton and gave up on Bitdefender .
Had so many problems it was unbelievable,The Helpdesk is totally worthless,Only solution they have is uninstall/reinstall,
The 2009 range is after so many Months still in BETA ?
Especially if you have Vista Bitdefender is Worthless !

BitDefender works very good on my system, I' don't have any problem with it. I saw that bitdefender just changed their forum in a support forum, and as I can see, the support is answering the questions really quick.

Hi Jannis,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. However, my experience with this software has left a sour taste in my mouth. If you've read the previous posts, I detailed exactly what I did to try to resolve my issue. Then, I got in touch with an online chat representative who gave me further instructions. Don't get me wrong. I actually missed having Bitdefender primarily because I was able to use it to manage my small home network. However, when it didn't work on my computer, I was left to dry. I did my due diligence by searching online and following their instructions, but they did not follow through. That is a major sin in my book.

Maybe the problems you experienced are gone now, why don't you use it again? And then if it doesn't work, just use the forum, like I told you, the problems are solved very fast now on the forum.

For starters, I've switched operating systems (from Vista to Ubuntu). I'm willing to give Bitdefender a second shot as I'm going to evaluate Bitdefender's Scanner for Unices. Cheers!

Aha, well now I understand why you can't test and use it anymore. I haven't tested the unices version, but it must be good :)

Just as a follow-up, I'm currently using the Bitdefender Scanner for Unices and I confess to being really happy with it. I suspect my happiness is a function of the operating system I'm on and the really slick Unices scanner. :) Cheers!

My experience with bitdefender is a good one, the first time I used it, it detected some viruses and deleted them, it works ok on my pc.

Are you sure you aren't biased because my logs tell me you are possibly an employee of Bitdefender? Please don't spam my comments with fake endorsements. I'm just a user who did not like what happened to her and wrote about it. If I'm wrong and you are genuinely happy with Bitdefender's product, then more power to you.

Oh I know what you mean. Ive bought Bitdefender IT 2009 as well, I am running 64 bit vista, and the darn thing keeps restarting itself, sometimes blocking my firefox or other programs. It just restricts internet usage, eventho I put it into exeptions. I uninstall it every month, as I bought it for 1 year and I am still hoping they will fix it, cause it seemed to be the best reviewed AV out there. Tho I have really really bad experience with it. I am using NOD32 in the mean time and I got to say it is a treat.

"DITTO" FROM A NEW PERSON SUCKED INTO BIT DEFENDER IS 2009. HERE'S MY CHAT LOG FROM A FEW DAYS AGO...
======================================
Paul: help
You are now speaking with Danny of Technical Support.
Danny: Hello!
Danny: How may I assist you?
Paul: good morning...Cannot connect all 5 of my computers to my personal home network as is supposedly possible in BitDefender Internet Security 2009
Paul: just bought and downloaded Internet Security 2009 yesterday, 5 user pack
Danny: Can you connect with the BitDefender Firewall disabled?
Paul: having trouble, almost got them, then they akll started disappearing, now it's all goofy
Paul: not sure, let me check
Danny: Ok.
Paul: nope...and what's stranger, my two Vista computers in this network do not even come up seeing each other at all now, when I go to add a computer...some say they are already members and some say they don't have the software installed, and no red icon on the computer... ???
Danny: Are you talking about the BitDefender Network?
Danny: Can you share files between 2 computers?
Paul: yes
Paul: they are all present in the windows network, and on fixed ip addresses, 1 Vista Ultimate, 1 Vista Business, 1 XP Pro and 1 XP Home, and one not turned on right now
Paul: I am talking about the BitDefender Network for managing your security on all the computers from one screen???
Danny: I understand. Try to manually add the IP address of one PC and tell me if you can see it then.
Paul: I'm getting an idle message now and it says our chat is going to end in 2 minutes??
Paul: I told you aboVE....THEY ARE ON FIXED IP ADDRESSES ALREADY... ;-)
Danny: The chat window will not close, that is an automatic message.
Danny: Oh, sorry. Please go to Start->Run-> type: services.msc
Danny: Go to the BitDefender Arrakis Server, right click on it and start it.
Danny: Do this action on 2 computers. Can you add them in the Network now?
Paul: nope, they don't even show up at all...and these are both the new Vista computers
Paul: started your server service on both
Danny: I will send you shortly after we end this chat session 2 diagnostic tools that will help us further investigate this issue and figure out a solution. Would this be ok with you?
Paul: seems we are going about this in somewhat of a random fashion? why not start at the beginning?
Paul: I've downloaded the two tools: sysdump and FileInfo2008 already?
Danny: Run them on your computer and send me the reports that are generated. Meantime, you can try to remove the network that you have created and make a new one with the Arrakis Server started.
Paul: I need more directions on how to run these please...and do I remove all my computers first from their networks....I'm confused....can you please call me and let's do this over the phone perhaps?
Paul: 1st question: When you join or create a BitDefender (Arrakis) network, do you use the exact same password for the network on all computers
Danny: Yes, use the same password on all computers.
Paul: 2. let's get two computers connected first, ok...these two Vista ones maybe? They are on fixed IP and can see each other in Windows workgroup, private network
Paul: just did it...and on the Vista Ultimate Desktop, it does not show that my new laptop on Vista Business even has BitDefender installed and 0.0.0.0 IP address for some reason? on the Vista Laptop, it does not even show the Vista Desktop computer as a computer to chose ???
Danny: Ok, in this case need to see the reports that are created by those diagnose tools.
Paul: directions please? you canot phone call me to di this or log into my computer?
Paul: running sysdump now
Danny: No, I'm sorry we can't call you and we can't remotely connect to your computer.
Paul: so there is no phone support at all for BitDefender???
Paul: I may just want to get my $$ back eventually if this gets too difficult or time consuming
Danny: 1-954-928-2780
Danny: This is our phone number:
Paul: sysdump is still running, depsite the fact that I have no idea what I am doing here?
Danny: The lines are opened 24/7.
Paul: why is this phone # not found anywhere on the support pages?
Danny: You can find here complete instructions in how run those tools:
Danny: http://www.bitdefender.com/KB95-en--Asking-for-assistance.html
Paul: ok, let's stay focused....am I running the correct tool for you ....???
Paul: I read that stuff...but you are supposed to be guiding me
Paul: eh ?
Danny: Please run the tools. The tool will create some reports. You will only have to send me back those reports.
Paul: I will repeat.... I am currently running sysdump...and it is still running on screen...now just went away?
Paul: now running FileInfo tool
Paul: ok log files created...now what?
Your party has left this session.
Paul: HELLOW !!!!! ????
===================================
PROBLEMS ARE STILL NOT RESOLVED, NETWORK IS STILL NOT SETUP, PROGRASM STILL CRASHES AND NO ONE FROM TECHNICAL SUPPORT EVER CONTACTS ME EXCEPT AUTOMATED MESSAGES FROM "support@bitdefender.com"....
AND "DANNY" HAS STILL NOT CALLED ME BACK... :(
WHERE DO I GO OR WHO DO I CALL TO GET REFUND...WANNA GO BACK TO SYMANTEC OR EVEN WINDOWS "LIVE ONE CARE" WHICH HAD HAD FOR 2 YEARS UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO...

there are Bitdefender happy stories, not only sad ones. I had some issues with my license key and tried to contact them; while waiting for their e-mail a found their webpage and figured out what I needed to do. When they reply they promised a license key extension to compensate for the unused time..so a totally different story for me! Bill

Wow. I'm so sorry that you are all having so much trouble with Bitdefender Internet Security 2009. I don't know what to tell you other than to completely uninstall Bitdefender Internet Security and look for another hassle-free solution such as Norton Internet Security 2009. In fairness to BIS 2009, they have a new version coming out so if you are fearless, check out the Beta products in their pipeline at: Beta Bitdefender. The following products are available for beta testing:
* BitDefender for HTTP Proxy
* BitDefender Total Security 2010 Beta
* BitDefender for Mac 2009 - Beta Product Concept Campaign
Good luck!!

I understand your plight : After using BitDefender happily on an old version for three years the latest offering V3, which I spent over a grand of my companies money on to cover all our office pcs and the file server is helping me lose hair - daily emails have been going back and fourth between DB support for three weeks now and I still
have an installation that A) Doesn't fully work. B) Creating an awful lot of server application problems.
They have another week before I ask for my cash back!
My Advise at this point, WARNING WILL ROBINSON BITDEFENDER IS DESCRIBED AS A SOLUTION WARNING WARNING!!!

So sorry to hear that, Russ. I hope they get back to you and fix the problem. Otherwise, I recommend you find a solution that works for you. Give Norton Internet security 2010 a try. I am using Norton on my laptop and I'm loving the experience.

Hmmmm,
I support 9 PC's at home...don't ask.
A few years ago, I was in support pain, I had Trend Micro, Bulldog, McAfee on various machines, 2000 and XP. Norton's install completely trashed a machine (rebuild from disk needed) so I din't even try that again. Each software had foibles.
I thought I'd get systematic in 2008 and tried Kapersky, Trend, Mcafee, and Bitdefender. Bulldog install gave me issues. Trend could never fix a problem, and Mcafee mail irritated me.
After a one month trial I thought I had less problems with Bitdefender, and bought a couple of 5 license packs. Boy did I buy problems. 4 machines were great, one flaky and it took too long to get support from Bitdefended, but I got it in the end and it worked, and another one was a nightmare. The fix needed on one machine diddn't work elsewhere. By now I had a mix of XP and Vista 32 and 64, Vista x64 was clearly best.
By mid 2009 I felt that every machine was stable and happy with Bitdefender. A couple of XP machines with multiple user accounts + PCchaperone +bitdefender +2Gb RAM ran like a dog, I'm talking 4-5 minute startups.
It's 2010 now, with Bitdefender 2010 and Windows7, and a smattering of SSD drives - it's a big happy family so far. The network works fairly well, tyhe individual support for each machine is manageable. PCchaperone is redundant due to parental controls (but it did do it smarter). I haven't had to call support in 10 months, despite all the upgrades.
I have had two trojan/malwares loaded by the kids that Bitdefender missed, but other scanners found, but these are unusual.
The journey was longer than I liked, but the end place appears good for a while. Each machine had it's issues, and patience is required with support, but it is better than the others I tried.

Dear God. 9?? PCs at home. You must be a developer. Glad you've found a combination of Bitdefender and other on-demand scanners work for you. I'm happily coexisting with Norton Internet Security 2010 on the 3 PCs in my household. Unless Norton screws what they have going for them right now i.e. non-intrusive, effective at detecting the main baddies, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved using it, but when I had problems and got left in lurch, it was a painful place to be especially. Bitdefender is just not for me especially if the customer support is still as atrocious as it was when I penned the two posts about my experiences. 6 weeks + to respond to the issue I described is simply unconscionable. Cheers!
